Today I Feel My Age

Most days, I don’t feel as old as I am.
Usually, thankfully, I feel fruitfully young.
Alive, kind, caring, optimistic, joyful, vibrant, giving, hopeful.
I keep these traits alive within me, as strong as I can make them.
Some mock my naiveté, but the torch within me still burns bright.
It keeps me alive, moving forward, authentic, true.

But not today.
Today, I feel my age.
I feel the weight of decades of gravity pressing down upon my shoulders, relentless.
I sense the usual joy drained from my face.
I see the usual sparkle in my eyes dimmed just a bit.
I feel tired, deep tired.
Not weary, but withered.

Yet, alas, I am here. I am alive.
I know tomorrow I’ll rise from my bed,
ready for another round,
another day of possibilities,
of beauty, of growth.

Keep the torch within burning bright, my dear friends,
especially on the darkest, coldest of nights.
